Brief upadate on the Finnish Rowers Expedition

March 22th boat was at Georgetown (SC). Expedition (1 permanent member and 17 rotating crew members) was able to cross the Cape Fear River and advance up to Wrightsville in Wilmington (NC), which was the location at 27th of March. In generel, the expedition has been challenged with low temperatures during the over night rows and frequent (if not constant) head winds. At times it has been also challenging to manage with the tidal currents, which is fairly uncommon extra "spice" of rowing for the Finns. Approximated current location would be close to Cape Lookout (NC).

I wish all the best for the upcoming rowers!

Hello! Our rowing boat has left Helsinki and should arrive to Port Everglades Jan 21st. The row is planned to start 1st of Feb from Key West, FL. ETA in New York, NY, is 16th of May. It has taken a lot of work (and money) to ship the boat as an individual. Hopefully all the papers for the Customs are in order. Physical training has gone okay at least for the main rower. Couple withdrawals at late in the game but nothing serious. Let me know on the soutaja*at*hotmail.com (*at* = @) if you want more info or the estimate of a schedule. I'll try to reply it the best I can.

David,

Thanks for stopping by! I spent a good two or so weeks lusting over your boats on your web site about a year ago. The Kevlar ones were definitely on my radar. I especially like the hunting history associated with these boats, which, among my desire to learn a bit of wood working and boat 'stuff' myself, led me to choose a used Gardner gunning dory for near-term adventure rows.

All the best!

Hello!

I'm sorry for not replying sooner. Our adventure from FL to NY is getting close and all the preparations are still ahead of us. Well, what else is new?
Boat is being prepared as we speak and its condition is a bit alarming (at least to my untrained eye). 16000 miles on different waters have left their scars. It is being nurished with mixture of linen-oil and tar. Boats owner is sure it will last one more trip, but as well it will most likely be her last.
Our main rower is also coming to look around places and make some arrangements there in September. Mentally we are trying to be prepared for anything and everything.
We still don't have transport from Helsinki to US but we are working on it. We also tried to get some sponsors (Nokia) but no "luck" there.
The departure date is estimated to be 1st week of February 2010. I'll try to be more active and let you know the schedule when we make it permanent.

Any info or questions you can send to soutaja*at*hotmail.com (*at* = @)

James,
Thank you for your kind words. Regarding the low freeboard in our boats .... this actually is a security measure. Put up less sail and the wind won't be able to find you so easily. Of course, too little freeboard invites the ocean into your boat....the trick is getting it just right. A page on our website http://www.adirondack-guide-boat.com/roughwater.html addresses this issue.
A customer, Al Freihofer, has rowed his guideboat from Troy, NY, to Baltimore.... including some open-ocean rowing. I think he found the boat to be quite dry. He has a blog, a video and other information on the web.... this was a bit that I most easily found.
http://www.youtube.com/user/ktylerconk
If anyone would like further info....or one of our dvd's....our e-mail address is
guideboat@together.net
    Best regards,
    David

I've decided to use okoume plywood to replace the motor well hole in the hull - this instead of using Home Despot plywood. The problem is finding okoume nearby. Annapolis, MD, looks like the closest I can do, so a trip up is warranted, but hopefully a trip worthwhile.

Just came across this post, so, sorry for the late reply -

I have some experience on the ICW in the southern part of North Carolina, and also have a small place in Holden Beach, NC. I'd be more than happy to assist the team in any way possible - logistics, food, showers, etc. - as they travel through that area. Also, I work in geographic analysis, and have the resources to email them a variety of large- and small- scale maps if needed.
